It is a very small world
A few years ago, my wife and I contemplated buying a house in France and, one summer, we spent 6 weeks looking all over the area we fancied and must have seen almost 100 houses.
In one of them, owned by an English couple, I noticed a picture from the First World War of a company of men from the 8th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry and one name stood out – that of Adolphus Vane Tempest.
Adolphus was, it turned out, the houseowner’s grandfather and it was he that signed the Attestation Papers of both of my grandfather George Millward’s brothers, Levi and Robert.
