What is Family Tree Genie?
Family Tree Genie is run by myself David Millward. I will carry out family tree research on your behalf, tracing your ancestors as far back as available records, certificates and census information will allow. That’s whether you’re based in the UK, USA or Australia.
How will you find out about my family’s past?
On initial contact, I will request the family name and line you’d like us to trace and any other details you can provide, i.e. births, deaths, marriages, etc. I will then carry out some initial free and no obligation family tree research to see whether I can research your family history. Once I’ve established that I can trace your ancestors, I’ll be back in touch using your preferred method of contact to request further information where necessary.
How far back will you be able to trace my family line?
Once I’ve confirmed that I can research your family history, I will try to go back as far as I can, usually to the late 1700’s. However, this completely depends on available local and Parish Register records and information available. For example, if you’re aged 30 years, I typically expect to uncover up to five or six generations of ancestors, born from 1800 onwards.
What information do you need to research my family tree?
Sometimes a name is all that is needed to get started but the more information supplied, the easier it is for me to help you. Any detail like birthdays, marriages, where they lived etc would be very helpful. I can then carry out some initial family research to see if I can trace your ancestors. Further into our research, I will undoubtedly contact you to ask questions about your family, i.e. names of grandparents, parents and children.
What can you find out about my family’s past?
Dependent on information and records available, I will be able to find out about marriages, births, deaths and the occupations of your ancestors. I’ll tell you where they lived, who they married and whether they had any children. Using our skills and expertise, I will try to uncover as much information as possible about your family.
Which areas of the UK do you cover?
No matter where you live, I can research your family history. My wife and I have helped people in Cheshire, where we’re based, but also in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and London. We can even help if you’re based elsewhere in the world.
What if you can’t research my family tree? Will I be charged a fee?
No. I always carry out free, no obligation research during initial enquiry, to see if it’s possible to trace your family tree. If I don’t think it is possible, then I will be unable to continue and you won’t be charged for the initial research.
I’m not based in the UK. Can you still research my ancestors?
I specialise in helping American and Australian families to trace their UK ancestors. If you’re based in the USA or Australia and you’d like to discover your family’s past, please fill out our contact form in the first instance and I will carry out some initial research to see if I can trace your family line. This initial research is free and you are under no obligation.
How much will it cost to research my family tree?
There are three options you can choose from for Family Tree Genie to research: the male line; the male and female line or the family line, which traces as much as your family as possible.
Once you’ve told us which option you’d like us to research, I’ll carry out some free, no obligation investigation to see if I can help. Our prices are based on successful and complete searches only.
I will always quote a price for the chosen option at the time of enquiry – this will be a maximum cost.
If you do decide to retain my services, I ask for an immediate non-refundable deposit with the balance payable upon completion before arranging the final handover of the research, where practicable, in person.
Once my family tree research is complete, what do I get?
Once I discover your past and the balance is paid, I will present you with your very own family tree – both electronically and printed – in a quality presentation folder or even as paperback for you to keep and treasure forever.
This will include all the family groups, for example man and wife (or wives) and their immediate children plus for each group – any relevant birth, baptism, death, marriage, census and WW1 service record or pension details.
There will also be a CD disc of all the data electronically as images or PDFs to see and read plus as a family tree in Family Tree Maker 2017, GEDCOM and My Family Tree formats.
A full printed family tree is optional and can be priced on an individual basis, depending on the size of tree and paper/canvas option.
Finally, I always meet my clients to present them with their family tree and talk through their family history.
