Hello and welcome to Family Tree Genie. I’m David Millward, an experienced genealogist born and based in Cheshire. I’ve spent the past 20 years helping people to trace their ancestors.

I’m passionate about genealogy and began researching my own Durham-based family over 30 years ago when one of life’s unforeseen turns took me to Durham to live. My tree extends to over 3,000 people and goes back to 1718 in Benton, Northumberland on the paternal line and even further on my wife Clare’s line.

Over that time, I’ve learned the skills of research and how to avoid the usual red herrings. Family Tree Genie is now a family venture – my wife, Clare, takes an active part in the research.

To help you create your own family tree, I provide three different packages for family tree research, including the male line; female line and family line. How much we discover about your family is dependant on available family data from the following sources:

    • Census data from 1841 to 1921 – details of the family, their occupations, places of birth etc. 1911 Census gives the most comprehensive picture of the family including how long a couple have been married, how many children they have had (and how many survived!).
    • 1939 Register – a type of census taken at the outset of WW2 to determine population size, needs etc. Became the NHS database and served as the database for rationing in the war.
    • Marriage Records – every marriage since the introduction of Civil Registration in July 1837 is recorded and a copy of the full Marriage Certificate is supplied.
    • Birth & Death Records – details will be supplied. Certificates are usually only sourced as an aid to tracing the family line. You can opt to have these supplied as standard at a flat rate of £10 each.
    • Parish registers – before Civil Registraion began in England and Wales in 1837, parish registers were the prime source of family history.
    • Military Records for any family member serving in the military, a copy of their Attestation Papers (basic personal information), Service Records, Medal Records.

Rest assured, I offer a personal and bespoke service to help unlock the secrets of your ancestors.

Please note, I don’t just carry out family research in Cheshire, I am able to trace your family history no matter where you’re based, that’s whether you’re elsewhere in the UK – Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Staffordshire, Yorkshire, Shropshire, West Midlands, East Midlands – or based in the USA or Australia. If you’d like to find out more, please get in touch.
