Kurt Cobain’s Irish roots discovered
Researching family trees can be a very rewarding process. Finding out about past relatives and their life stories can be a great experience, especially if you discover your roots are linked to a famous person.
According to an article in the Belfast Telegraph, Fionnola O`Reilly from Co Tyrone in Ireland made such a discovery after an American relative hinted that there may be a family connection to the lead singer of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain.
Apparently it took nearly six years for Fionnola and her sister Maeve Erwin to confirm that their long-lost cousin was indeed the grunge legend, Kurt Cobain. They made the discovery after finding out about his ancestors, Samuel and Letitia, whose surname was originally spelt Cobane.
The Cobane’s left their Irish farm five generations ago and moved to Canada before settling and working as shoemakers in the state of Washington in the US.
According to the news report, Fionnola’s niece Caoimhe Kelly, who is Kurt’s fifth cousin and a huge fan, was delighted to find out she was related to the Nirvana front-man.
After completing her family tree, Fionnola presented her father with it for his 70th birthday.
So it just goes to show, you could be related to someone as famous as Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain! You’ll never know until you look into your family’s past.
